Road trips in Canada

Canada ranks very highly on my favourite countries to travel to. The vast wilderness of Canada makes this a country with limitless opportunities for an ambitious road tripper. From the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast, and up to the Arctic Circle, there are mountains, lakes, forests, waterfalls, islands, and wildlife are found in this vast swathe of North America.

I have enjoyed several road trips across the West, in Alberta and British Colombia, as well as trips in Ontario, Quebec, and the eastern Maritime States. And yet, still, I have far more that I want to see: Newfoundland and Labrador, the northern states (including the Yukon), the polar bears at Churchill, the prairies in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and – hopefully one day – Mount Thor in Auyuittuq National Park, Nunavut, a peak that looks like its from another world.

The benefits of travelling around Canada are obvious: the natural beauty, stunning locations, wildlife-spotting opportunities and variety of activities, whilst not forgetting the friendly locals, too. The potential difficulties range from the long distances that might be involved, the hazardous weather – from very hot to extremely cold, and dangerous wildlife. With precaution and planning, these are unlikely to stop you from appreciating your time in this wonderful country.

Research the weather beforehand – you will be amazed how Canadians still get out and aboot in the middle of winter. Read up on wildlife safety (I’ve shared some tips here). While decent planning for your road trip will help you create a suitable and manageable itinerary (see my tips here).

I have shared stories and photos from my Canadian road trips below. I would love to hear travels from other people too – and possibly inspire my next adventure.
