Backpacking In Southeast Asia

I arrived in Asia following a year in New Zealand, which had concluded with a well-planned four-week road trip around that country. In contrast, I entered Asia without a set itinerary, with my budget allowing up to three months to explore as I wished.

The overall plan was to see the countries of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. Aside from that, the destinations and activities could be decided on the go. There were some positives and negatives of this approach. We went to well-known places initially, following in others’ footsteps. After a while, we decided to be a bit more adventurous, and visited locations we hadn’t known existed.

Our time in the four countries varied. In the larger two, Thailand and Vietnam, it was around four weeks in each. And in the smaller two, Cambodia and Laos, around two weeks in each. I believe, while there were similarities, the four countries have a distinct culture, a variety of food, and beautiful landscapes, making them uniquely enjoyable.

If you decide on an ambitious trip like this, be prepared for uncomfortable moments. I was fortunate to see so much of this region. But travelling in tropical countries can be challenging; it is hot, sweaty, and stifling. The many bus journeys were long and, after hours on end, felt cramped. Ultimately, it was well worth the effort. There were many moments of awe, excitement, and enjoyment.

Thailand is a beautiful country. There is great food to eat and friendly people to meet. The first part of my trip started in Bangkok and took me to some of the popular islands.

The second part of my Thai experience saw me explore two National Parks that have huge areas dedicated to preserving pristine nature and are home to amazing wildlife.

I explored the ancient temples of Angkor Wat, as well as the massive Mekong River. In between, I learnt more about the complex history of the country.

Travelling from South to North on epic bus journeys, there were many stops at wonderful destinations. Vietnam earns its reputation as great country to visit.

Laos is a land of opportunity for travellers, with welcoming locals, impressive landscapes, and much to explore.

The final few days were spent in Thailand. I reflect on the trip and my feelings towards the places I’d visited.
